Corry
On 22nd February, tended by his loving
partner Aine, my friend and fellow advocate Michael Corry, doctor, psychiatrist,
psychotherapist and thoroughly human being passed away.
Mike was a visionary, a man with a
compassionate sense of the deeper issues governing us all, together with the
courageous and enduring commitment to bringing those into
consciousness.
To the end he was particularly troubled by
the reckless and adversarial philosophy and practice of conventional
psychiatry, more specifically ECT, which he always considered an affront to
humanity.
As if the Fates themselves decreed,
synchronistically on the day immediately after his death, fellow advocates
tabled the first ever official protest of this medical practice
to a mental health Dail Committee.
I have no doubt whatever that Mikes commitment and vision will continue to inspire the growing local and
international consensus committed to continuing the struggle for a more
humane mental health system and by extension society.
